A resource center for AI and Data Science in investigative journalism.

It is a collaboration between the AI Lab and the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at OsloMet. The aim of AIJRC is to research, assist and promote the use of AI and data science techniques in investigative journalism. We achieve this with a three-pronged approach of education, tool development and data analysis support.

  • Bilateral education directed to journalists and data scientists. We aim to give journalists the background to understand AI and to recognize stories where AI can be useful. At the same time we aim to train data scientists to understand journalistic questions and the specific constraints in working with data in the public domain.
  • Methods and Tools development. We craft tools tailored for specific projects such as database development or clustering algorithms. The goal is to facilitate the transfer of state-of-the-art methods to fields of application in Journalism and Norwegian NLP. We also work towards democratizing these technologies with open source tools.
  • Data intelligence consulting. We provide consultancy and support to investigative journalism projects that show strong potential to benefit from data-driven approaches. This includes exploratory data analysis, tailored tool development and assistance in data interpretation. We aim to make such assistance available to journalists no matter the size and budget of the publishing house.

Our education activities include:

  • Workshops and talks at various conferences including DataSKUP, SKUP, Global Fact 9
  • Tailored talks at major publishing houses including NRK, Dagbladet and VG
  • Seminars at bachelor level courses
  • Master’s thesis projects
