The power of algorithms
WP1 investigates the design and implementation of new educational strategies involving creative use of digital tools within school subjects to develop understanding of algorithms, digital technology and AI. We will leverage technologies that include various sensors and capabilities to engage students in hands-on activities relevant to the subjects. Digital empowerment involves meaningful interaction with technology, confidence in one’s abilities, and awareness of technology’s impact on everyday life (Kong et al., 2019).
The following research question is raised: How can educational tools be designed and implemented to promote students’ understanding of the power of algorithms and digital technology?
Using a Participatory Design approach, practitioners and researchers will design and implement innovative teaching approaches, applicable for school and teacher education to give students firsthand experiences with technology. The interventions will focus on facilitating students’ development of skills and reflexivity in understanding how technology functions and how to engage with it critically, as is suggested in the literature (Dindler et al.,2020). Furthermore, interventions will focus on equipping student teachers with tools to promote students’understanding of how technology functions. WP1 will create robust educational tools and comprehensive strategies to enhance students’ knowledge foundation of the role and impact of technology in society. Data will be collected through video and participant observations in Danish, Finnish and Norwegian schools as well as student, practitioner and student teacher reflection logs.
