Fashion and uniform have opposing functions but are both linked to self-esteem and social power. My work is based on designing a graduate collection that unites fashion with uniform, using various means to create a flowing transition between the abstract, rules, and standards, and to break the line between military and civilian express. I have analyzed the uniform’s message within and outside of a military context, and, inspired by camouflage, I have aimed to create a transition between uniform conformity and fashion creativity. I have analyzed the expression “If you did not earn it, do not wear it,” to discuss the extent to which fashion has the right to use or abuse the uniform outside its symbolic and functional context.
