About Us
Who we are
SmartMet Lab is OsloMet’s flagship platform for advancing smart infrastructure technologies with global relevance. Positioned at the intersection of engineering, data science, and environmental resilience, the lab fosters collaboration between leading experts from academia, research institutions, and the infrastructure sector worldwide. The focus is on integrating digital solutions with physical infrastructure systems to increase safety, sustainability, and performance under evolving challenges such as climate change and urbanization. Support for the lab is provided through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Built Environment, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering at Oslo Metropolitan University. This institutional backing ensures a strong multidisciplinary foundation, enabling the integration of advanced engineering methods, computational tools, and applied sciences to address emerging challenges in infrastructure resilience and digital transformation.
In addition to academic research, SmartMet Lab serves as a living laboratory where advanced infrastructure monitoring, inspection, and predictive maintenance technologies are developed, validated, and scaled through real-world implementation. The lab is designed to support experimentation and innovation at all stages of the infrastructure lifecycle, from conceptual design and digital modeling to field-based data collection and decision-making support. A strong emphasis is placed on practical applicability, ensuring that new methodologies and tools can seamlessly transfer into engineering practice and public infrastructure management. With a unique blend of research, training, and pilot testing environments, SmartMet Lab fosters the generation of actionable knowledge and real-world solutions to today’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.
