We are pleased to announce the 18th annual NFEAP summer conference, which will take place on Thursday the 12th and Friday the 13th of June 2025 at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway.
The theme for the 2025 conference is EAP and The Unforeseen
What is the thing, in teaching or research, that you cannot see coming? What escapes programming and disrupts plans? What demands improvisation? What is the accident that, paradoxically, couldn’t be avoided?
And: what have we learned from accidents? When has something gone well exactly because we couldn’t plan it? When has the derailment of a plan turned out to be better than a plan?
When we teach academic writing and speaking, we plan carefully. We are conscientious; we work with needs analyses, with disciplinary experts and with our own curiosity to match teaching and learning activities to the needs of students. When we conduct research, we are just as careful: we write project proposals, apply for ethics approval, write interview guides, and devise gantt charts and timelines. But we cannot plan for everything; and sometimes the improvisation turns out to be better than the plan. NFEAP this year is an opportunity – or, perhaps, a chance – to reflect on the unforeseen in teaching EAP: the moments of accident, surprise and disruption that teach us something about EAP, about the construction of academic knowledge, and about teaching itself.
We welcome work that thinks about the unforeseen, chance, accidents and surprises in relation to EAP concepts; AI in academic writing and thinking; EAP training methods, principles, practices and research; needs analysis, syllabus and materials design, teaching strategies and methodological issues; group/interdisciplinary teaching; critical EAP; learning technologies; academic identities; academic literacies; any other relevant topics.

- Standard paper presentation (30 minutes: 20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes Q&A);
- Knowledge co-creation session (30 minutes: 5-10 minute presentation of points of departure, followed by 20 minutes to discuss and develop with audience/participants. The chair will keep time, and the presenter will be at liberty to organise the session);
- Round table (45 minutes: there should be 3-5 presenters who will each provide a point of departure that is then developed in conversation by the round table).
