Another Indian researcher, Kavita Upadhyay, will be working on the case study of the Uttarakhand High Court’s decision to grant legal personhood to the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
Kavita is an independent journalist and researcher. A Himalayan resident herself, Kavita’s work lies at the intersection of politics, policy, and the environment in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). In the past, she has worked with two of India’s most prominent newspapers – ‘The Hindu’ and ‘The Indian Express’ – where she reported from the Indian States of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Kavita has written about climate change, disasters from events such as extreme rainfall, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), forest fires, human-wildlife conflict, migration, and contentious infrastructure projects in the IHR such as hydropower and road construction. She is a graduate in Water Science, Policy and Management from the University of Oxford.
