Members of the Source Criticism and Mediated Disinformation team recently put together a special issue in Digital Journalism. Pithily described as the ‘fighting fakes’ issue, the articles in Volume 10, Issue 5 approach the combatting of misinformation from a variety of angles–factchecking practices, institutional efforts, audience perceptions, and more. In the introduction, Valérie Bélair-Gagnon and other team members argue:
“[T]he institutionalization of interactions related to misinformation is central to scholarly understandings of the visibility and structural inequalities of institutionalized efforts to fighting fakes. We look at the ways that contributors of this special issue have shown how materialities, institutions, practices, politics, economics, and culture shape the field of fighting fakes.”

This special issue provides useful insights into the complexities of combatting misinformation for both scholarly and practicing readers. The team members involved were able to announce the publication–and the open access–at the recent Global Fact 9 conference in Oslo.
