The Riverine Rights team visits the Río Atrato in Colombia

From the 3rd to the 8th of December 2023, the researchers of the Riverine Rights project held a workshop in Colombia. Two days were spent in Quibdó which lies on the Atrato River and is the capital of the Chocó Province. Here we had meetings with representatives of different actors involved in the in the follow-up of the Constitutional Court decision giving the river the status of a subject of rights, and met with local researchers and students at the Technological University of Chocó. Time also allowed for a short boat trip up the river. The last three days were spent in Medellín. We held a well-attended open seminar on our research, which included the showing of videos produced on the Rio Atrato, as well as discussion where local researchers from the case countries discussed the issue of doing research on a field to which they had a strong emotional attachment. Also important for our project, we had several days of discussions within the team. This allowed the sharing of results from the three case studies (Rio Atrato, Whanganui River, the Ganga and Yamuna) and the drawing out of more general lessons from the project, as well as the planning of further dissemination through publications and a closing conference in Oslo in August 2024.
