Asia launch of media report
Vice Chancellor at the University of the Punjab, Muhammad Zakria Zakar, spoke at the International Conference on “World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development: A Pakistani Perspective on UNESCO Report” in Lahore 27 February.
After being welcomed to the inaugural session by Bushra Hameedur Rahman and Noshina Saleem on behalf of the Institute for Communication Studies (ICS), Camila Ferro from UNESCO presented the report. Norwegian Ambassador Tore Nedrebø, Swedish Ambassador Ingrid Johansson and Elisabeth Eide from JMIC commented it.
The Pakistani journalists Mazhar Abbas and Wajahat Saeed Khan gave their perspectives on journalism in their country. Faculty member Fahad Mahmood and Syed Abdul Sirjai from Bahria University in Islamabad also contributed.
In the afternoon, local and foreign journalists and academics met in parallel sessions to discuss trends in media freedom, pluralism, independence and safety – the themes of the report. Media researchers presented their papers in two separate sessions.
Finally, to conclude the event, Abida Eijaz from ICS and Najiba Ayubi from Afghanistan shared their views, followed by Amparo Cadavid from Colombia and Mughees-uddin Sheikh, Dean of the Faculty of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Central Punjab.
