Challenges to Freedom of Expression: Crimes against journalists: persecution, prevention, protection

The international day to end impunity for crimes against journalists was marked with a special event in Oslo 2 November, hosted by Free Expression Foundation (Fritt Ord) and Executice Director Knut Olav Åmås.

Executive Director of ARTICLE 19 Thomas Hughes showed a new metrix to evaluate the state of freedom of expression and information around the world.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide presented  human rights as a key component of Norway’s foreign and development policy.

Guests from Namibia, Mexico, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh discussed protection and safety of journalists in their and other countries.

Persecution of crimes against journalists rarely conclude with verdicts, and the processes can last for decades, it was said. Other pointed out that  effective persecution may still serve as prevention and protection.
