Section for Human Rights, Democracy and Gender Equality in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has given JMIC (Journalism & Media International Center) a new grant of NOK 5 million to continue the work to strengthen institutions for freedom of expression and democracy in countries in the south.

The work takes place especially within the prioritized areas of access to information, safety and independent media – and is a continuation of 17 projects that have been going on for many years.

The new grant means, among other things, that the Rig on press freedom will be organized in Palestine in the coming year – and also an innovation; a global news feed will be produced by students in different countries.

The photojournalistic collaboration project in Nepal and Bangladesh will also continue, decentralized and digital in the first months of 2021.

Included in the grant is a flexible fund, which can be used as seed money for new projects. A digital platform where unemployed photojournalists can exchange experiences is one such idea, training in  risk journalism another.
