Global celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Jakarta

PhD candidate and MEKK member, Marte Høiby, participated at the global celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Jakarta. The event was organized in cooperation between UNESCO, the government of Indonesia and the Indonesian Press Council. Marte joined two workshops, one on Human Rights and Safety of Journalists, and another one on Fact-checking & Social Verification, arranged by Google. She also represented MEKK research group at the special academic session, a research conference held alongside UNESCO’s observance of World Press Freedom Day.

The event attracted unprecedented levels of attendance, with media experts, practitioners, civil society representatives, government members, students and academics from more than 90 countries, taking part in the event. Thirty partner organizations were officially associated with the event, which focused on media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies.

Taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 1st to the 4th of May, the event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of free and fact-based journalism in promoting peace and justice and supporting the efficiency, accountability and inclusiveness of institutions, in line with the 16th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal.
