How could thousands of revolutionary Norwegians support and admire Enver Hoxha´s regime -a brutal dicatorship where political opponents were imprisoned and executed?
Tourist travels were regularly organized by the Norwegian-Albanian Friendship Fellowship year after year from the end of the 1960s to the beginning of the 1980s. Albania was considered to be the fortress of socialism in Europe, and thousands of Norwegians joined these trips, including Rune Ottosen, the author of Tourist in Utopia.
The latter has returned to Albania after the fall of Communism, with a more critical and self-examining point of view. He has interviewed ordinary people about their lives before and after the end of Hoxha´s regime. The book also reveals that there still are authoritative features from communism that thrive beneath the democratic surface of today´s Albania.
