The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) is an advanced study institute in the humanities and social sciences. Currently IWM is leading the “Documenting Ukraine” initiative. This research project aims to document the Russian-Ukrainian war by capturing the human experiences of the conflict and making them accessible to a global audience. The materials gathered and created through this project will be stored in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary archive.

As of 2024 IWM launched INDEX, Institute for Documentation and Exchange, a new cultural and research institute. Its mission is to strengthen the Ukrainian intellectual front and promote global knowledge about Ukraine. This initiative stems from IWM’s long-standing commitment to Ukraine, which includes programs like “Ukraine in European Dialogue” and “Documenting Ukraine“. INDEX aims to connect initiatives that document the war and foster international exchange through scholarships for academics and cultural practitioners from Ukraine and abroad. As an institution based in Lviv, INDEX aspires to become an integral part of Ukraine’s institutional landscape.
