The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) is an institute for advanced studies within humanities and social sciences. IWM has initiated and leads the project “Documenting Ukraine” where permanent IWM fellows Katherine Younger and Timothy Snyder are part of the project team. The project aims to document the Russian-Ukrainian war by capturing the human experiences of the conflict and making them accessible to a global audience. Through the project IWM supports Ukrainian scholars, journalists, artists and public intellectuals that work on such documentation projects.  The materials gathered and created through the project will be stored in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary archive.

On 7 September 2024 permanent fellow IWM Timothy Snyder and Ukrainian writer and intellectual, Serhiy Zhadan took part in launching INDEX,  Institute for Documentation and Exchange, a new cultural and research institute based in Lviv. INDEX spings out of the IWM projects “Documenting Ukraine” and “Ukraine in European Dialogue” and the mission of INDEX is to strengthen the Ukrainian intellectual front and promote global knowledge about Ukraine. INDEX aims to connect initiatives that document the war and foster international exchange through scholarships for academics and cultural practitioners from Ukraine and abroad. As an institution based in Lviv, INDEX aspires to become an integral part of Ukraine’s institutional landscape.

INDEX encourages scholars working on Ukraine to follow them on facebook, Instagram or X where their forthcoming calls for fellowships and other news will be published.
