UKRAINETT+ PARTNER INSTITUTIONS IN UKRAINE

This is the first in a series of presentations of research institutions and universities in Ukraine with past and/or ongoing cooperation with Norwegian institutions. Karazin University is one of the two coordinating institutions in the UKRAINETT+ project and will contribute to network-building between Norway and Ukraine and dissemination of research-based knowledge to Ukrainian stakeholders. 

For 219 years, Karazin University has been maintaining its traditions of education, science and enlightenment, not  resting on its laurels but staying ahead of the times despite all the circumstances. Karazin University is ranked second among Ukrainian higher education institutions in the QS World University Ranking (741-750). Currently 15 717 students are studying at the University, including 13 951 Ukrainian citizens, 1206 international students from 31 countries and 641 postgraduate students. In the course of  the admission process in 2023 4519 new students were enrolled despite the war conditions. 

The University has one of the largest university campuses in Ukraine with altogether 25 Schools including Educational and Research Institutes that train specialists in over 230 majors, covering the whole range of modern classic university education. About 440 full professors, over 1300 associate professors and PhD students work at KKNU. Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, KKNU has not been displaced and continues all its activities in Kharkiv. Currently most classes are conducted online, but students complete the practical components of their programs offline, including medical apprenticeships in the hospitals of Kharkiv, other Ukrainian cities and partner clinics abroad. 

International cooperation 

The University’s internalization strategy is based on its Development Program for 2019-2025. Our international partners include 250 scientific and educational institutions from 55 countries. Karazin University is successfully implementing 12 double degree programs. A range of educational programs at the university are taught in English. As for projects, Karazin University is participating in 9 Erasmus + KA2 projects and implementing 6 Jean Monnet projects as well as 3 projects under the Horizon program. 

The School of Sociology and cooperation with Norwegian partners 

At Karazin University several joint projects with Norwegian research institutions have been conducted at the School of Sociology. The School of Sociology educates students and conducts research in the fields of “Sociology”, “Social Work”, “Social and Media Communications”, and “Journalism”, with more than 100 different courses. The main research areas of the School of Sociology lie in the fields of: Social communications in a changing world; Youth and education in the information society; Sociology of social work and management in modern society; Research methods of current problems of modern society; Processes of integration and disintegration in divided societies; Social changes under war conditions; New media and communications strategies of the information society. 

The School of Sociology has taken part in three joint projects with research institutions in Norway:  

  1. “The Accommodation of Regional Diversity in Ukraine” (ARDU), joint project with Oslo Metropolitan University (Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway) financed by the Norwegian Research Council 2018-2021. 8 researchers from the School of Sociology took part in this project (among them 4 young researchers and 4 Associate Professors) 🔗
  1. “Ukrainian geopolitical fault-line cities: urban identities, geopolitics and urban policy”, joint project with the University of Oslo financed by the Norwegian Research Council 2018-2024. 1 researcher of School of Sociology was co-coordinator of this project. 🔗
  1. “Fostering the Urban Food System Transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation (Fusilli)» financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, 2021-2024.  Project cooperation with researchers from Oslo Metropolitan University within work package 1 work package 1 “Network of FOOD2030 Living Labs”. 8 researchers from the School of Sociology took part in this project (among them 4 young researchers and 4 Associate Professors), 🔗 

Furthermore, Karazin Kharkiv National University has received funding from the EEA Financial Mechanism (Norway Grants) and the state budget of the Slovak republic for the project “Future of Public Administration” (FoPA 2021 – 2023), implemented within the framework of the Good Governance and Cross-Border Cooperation Program. 8 researchers from the School of Sociology took part in this project (among them 4 young researchers and 4 Associate Professors), 🔗
