“We must not lose the momentum to transform migration policy in Europe” – Seminar with Oleksii Goncharenko (on 7 October)

UKRAINETT is pleased to invite you to a seminar with Oleksii Goncharenko, Member of Parliament of Ukraine and President of the Committee on Migration and Refugees of PACE. 

The number of Ukrainian refugees continues to grow, with over 4.1 million Ukrainian asylum seekers now living in European countries. As of 10 September, 2024, almost 4.7 million internally displaced persons have been registered across Ukraine. 

In his lecture, Oleksii Goncharenko will:  

  • outline the achievements, plans, and vision for the further development of the system for protecting and supporting Ukrainian refugees.  
  • familiarize attendees with the analysis and practical recommendations for implementing the resolutions passed during the summer session of PACE. 
  • provide a brief overview of the situation with internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine and the resolution of pressing issues will be provided.

Biography:  

Oleksii Goncharenko is the Head of the Committee on Migration, Refugees, and Displaced Persons at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), a Ukrainian politician, and a member of the Ukrainian parliament. He is working on refugee issues in Europe and internally displaced persons issues in Ukraine.   

As a Ukrainian MP, he is a member of the “European Solidarity” group in Parliament, and head of the caucuses “For Democratic Belarus,” and “For Free Caucasus.” Currently, MP Goncharenko is deeply involved in advocating for the rights and well-being of Ukraine’s military personnel, for instance, increasing the duration of leaves and increasing payouts for various categories of military personnel.   

As part of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Oleksii repeatedly raised issues of human rights violations in the annexed Crimea and the occupied part of Donbas, achieved agreement on the creation of a special group that would monitor human rights in Belarus, actively advocated the expulsion of the Russian delegation from PACE. In 2024, he was appointed President of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons in PACE.   

Не has been fighting against Russian propaganda, and he is also the first Ukrainian MP who has a 1-million Youtube channel, primarily dedicated to debunking Russian propaganda. He has been included on Russia’s list of sanctioned individuals, considered extremist and terrorists. MP Goncharenko publishes widely in the international media in order to bring the truth to the world about Ukraine.  

Oleksii is a founder of Ukraine’s largest network of educational-cultural centers, the Goncharenko Centers, which since February 2022 have become volunteer hubs. You can find more information about Goncharenko Centers here.
