“Writing Against the Empire: Anticolonial Ukrainian Poetry Across the Past Two Centuries” (On 25 November)

Lecture with award winning poet Iryna Shuvalova about Ukrainian contemporary poetry.

When? Nov. 25, 2024 3:15 PM – 5:00 PM

Where? P.A. Munchs hus, seminarrom 14

Following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian poets have become global cultural ambassadors, raising awareness about the conflict and Ukraine. Many have also taken up arms, fundraised, volunteered, and investigated war crimes. This civic engagement has long been a feature of Ukrainian poets, reflecting a deep political awareness inherent in their writing, which has resisted Russia’s colonial violence for centuries.

In her talk, Iryna Shuvalova will explore contemporary Ukrainian poetry amid Russia’s ongoing aggression and its tradition of anticolonial resistance.

Iryna Shuvalova, a postdoctoral fellow at UiO, holds a PhD in Slavonic Studies from Cambridge and an MA in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth. She is a translator and award-winning poet, with five poetry books, including “Pray to the Empty Wells” (2019) and “Stoneorchardwoods” (2020), the latter named Ukraine’s book of the year.
