ABOUT

Geir Flikke (b. 1963) is a professor of Russian area studies at the University of Oslo. He obtained his doctorate at UiO in 2006 on a thesis that analyzes the reasons for the dissolution of the Russian democracy movement in the period 1992-1995. In the period 1993–95, Flikke was an interpreter at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Moscow, employed at the Center for Russian Studies at NUPI in the period 1995–2006, and as assistant director at NUPI in the period 2006–2010.

Flikke has written articles on Russian foreign policy (the alliance between Russia and China), Ukrainian domestic policy after the Orange Revolution, as well as a number of articles on Russian domestic policy. In 2014–2017, he led the research project “New political groupings and the Russian state” (NEPORUS), a three-year project supported by the Research Council of Norway, which studied the effects of the protests against Putin in the period 2011-12. In addition to a number of articles, the project culminated in the book Russia’s rebels: protest and reaction in Putin’s Russia (2011–2020), published at Cappelen Damm Akademisk with support from the non-fiction fund.

From 2021, Flikke will lead the project “National Values ​​and Political Reforms in Post-Maidan Ukraine” (VALREF), a four-year research project supported by the Research Council of Norway.

Flikke teaches Russian politics and history at Bachelor level, and holds a master’s course in area studies (RUS4550). In the period 1999-2000, Flikke was an adviser to the Høyre’s defence and foreign affairs faction in the Storting. Since 2010, he has been a member of the committee that awards Sjur Lindebrække’s prize for democracy and human rights, and in 2020 was nominated as a deputy member of the Nobel Committee from the Høyre.
