How has the imperial legacy of Central European states shaped the relationship between nation and state, especially in Ukraine?

The Center for Slavic and East European Studies at the University of Oslo will host the event “Peoples and Territorial Issues in Post-Habsburg Central Europe during the 20th Century”, featuring Étienne Boisserie, Professor of Modern and Contemporary Central European History at Inalco (Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales), Paris.

WHEN: 24, September, 2025, 15:15–17:00

WHERE University of Oslo, Eilert Sundts hus, A-blokka – Auditorium 4

The talk explores how the collapse of the Habsburg Empire reshaped Central Europe’s political and territorial landscape. It examines how newly formed nation-states navigated imperial legacies and how national identities were constructed and challenged across three key periods: post-WWI state-building, the upheavals of 1938–1947, and the post-communist transformations after 1989/91. Special attention will be given to Ukraine and the tensions between nation and state.
