1. Wartime surveys and current public opinion towards war issues in Ukraine

A lecture by Anton Grushetskyi, Sociologist and sociologist and executive director of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology

Followed by Q&A

Chair: Aadne Aasland, NIBR OsloMet

Russia’s full-scale military invasion significantly affected public moods and opinions of Ukrainians. Despite wartime limitations and barriers, Ukrainian sociologists manage to conduct high-quality surveys and provide reliable data reflecting public opinion on different issues. Kyiv International Institute of Sociology wants to share information both on methodological issues (raising the confidence in the data quality) and on current public opinion. There are lots of discussions inside and outside Ukraine about ongoing war and after-war peace settlement. However, it is crucial to understand what ordinary Ukrainians think. The presentation will include up-to-date survey results that will show attitudes towards war and peace settlement, value changes, and general perception of the current situation.

Anton Grushetskyi is a sociologist and executive director of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (independent private research institution that conducts surveys in Ukraine since early 1990s). He graduated from the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (master in sociology) and over 15 years works in KIIS. His research interests include quantitative methods and Ukrainians’ political orientations.

2. Recovering after the de-occupation: the case of two hromadas in Ukraine

A lecture by Vladyslav Baliichuk, Sociologist, CEO of Operational Sociology (OperSo)

Followed by Q&A

Chair: Aadne Aasland, NIBR OsloMet

OperSo has participated in the research phase of preparing a recovery plan for two hromadas affected by war. These hromadas are located near each other. One of them was occupied (Kherson region), and the other was under constant shelling (Dnipropetrovsk region). Therefore, we will be able to compare how communities recover and cope with the aftermath of military actions. As part of this project, we conducted a survey using face-to-face (f2f) interviews. The survey addressed new challenges and problems faced by residents immediately after the de-occupation of their  territories, satisfaction with the level of humanitarian support, trust in the authorities, and perceptions of the end of the war.

Vladyslav Baliichuk is a sociologist, executive director “Operatyvna Sociologia” (OperSo) company. From 2017 to 2019, as a Project Manager OperSo, he managed comprehensive research within the project “Participatory democracy and informed decisions at the local level in Ukraine”. The project was implemented by the Norwegian Association for Local and Regional Authorities (KS) together with the Norwegian Institute of Urban and Regional Research (NIBR) and the Association of Cities of Ukraine (AMU). In 2020 he was a member of the research team within the project “Accommodation of Regional Diversity in Ukraine” (ARDU). Research interests include electoral studies.
