One of the key objectives of UKRAINETT is to ensure that Norwegian-Ukrainian research contributes to informing Norwegian stakeholders involved in the reconstruction and development of Ukrainian society. This is achieved through ongoing analysis of the situation in Ukraine and regular engagement with relevant actors.
As part of this effort, UKRAINETT organizes biannual roundtables at the University of Oslo, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. The first roundtable was held in August 2024, followed by the second in February 2025, and the third most recently on 22 August 2025.
The latest roundtable focused on critical issues related to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the prospects for refugee return. The event was moderated by Geir Flikke (University of Oslo) and Aadne Aasland (OsloMet), and featured presentations and discussions aimed at deepening understanding and fostering dialogue among stakeholders.
The first presentation was delivered by Serhiy Kudelia from Baylor University, USA. Drawing on his new book Seize the City, Undo the State: The Inception of Russia’s War on Ukraine (Oxford University Press, 2025), Kudelia examined the 2014/2015 negotiation efforts and reflected on the lessons they offer for ending Russia’s current aggression against Ukraine.
A discussion followed, allowing participants to engage with Kudelia’s analysis and raise questions.
After a short break with refreshments, researchers from the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR/OsloMet) presented findings from their recent report Why Return to Ukraine?. The presentation focused on Ukrainian refugees’ perceptions of return and the evolving policies in Ukraine that may influence their decisions.
The roundtable concluded with a final discussion session, offering space for further dialogue and reflection on the themes presented.
