On 14 January, Tymofii Brik, the national coordinator of the European Social Survey (ESS) in Ukraine, visited the Institute for Social Research (ISF) to discuss methods and challenges related to conducting the survey during wartime. The ESS is a large-scale cross‑national survey that gathers data on attitudes, opinions, and behaviours in more than 30 European countries, providing a valuable basis for analysing political, social, and value-based developments over time. The event was organized by IFS and UKRAINETT.

Given the extensive consequences of nearly four years of large‑scale war in Ukraine, Brik presented how the ESS was conducted in Ukraine in 2022, just before Russia’s full-scale invasion, and outlined plans for data collection in 2026. The event offered insights into methodological adaptations and practical considerations for survey work under conflict conditions.

The programme began with ISF Director Kyrre Lekve opening the event, followed by comments from Norwegian Minister of Research and Higher Education, Sigrun Aasland. Brik then delivered his presentation on the ESS in Ukraine.

A panel discussion on conducting ESS in a country at war followed, featuring Rory Fitzgerald (Director of ESS), Tymofii Brik, and Maryna Rabinovych (UiT), moderated by ISF Research Director Johannes Bergh. The session concluded with questions and comments from the audience.
