ABOUT

Jostein Mattingsdal is a Norwegian naval officer, researcher, and PhD in Operational Psychology. He serves as a research lead at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy and is currently a fellow at the U.S. Naval War College. His work focuses on leadership, team dynamics, and performance under extreme conditions, particularly in military and high-risk contexts.

Mattingsdal is actively engaged in research and education related to Ukraine, including collaboration with Ukrainian defence institutions through the Black Sea Battle Lab. His work emphasizes learning and adaptation in high-intensity warfare, with a particular interest in maritime operations and allied cooperation. He has published on leadership, teamwork, and military operations, and frequently contributes to teaching and professional military education.
