“Myths and facts about corruption in Ukraine” – hybrid seminar with Andrii Biletskyi and Alisa Yurchenko (On 30 October)

UKRAINETT is pleased to invite you to a discussion with Ukrainian researcher Andrii Biletskyi and journalist Alisa Yurchenko. Our special guests will discuss the current state of anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine, ongoing investigations, and the crucial role of civil society in strengthening the anti-corruption movement. They will debunk common myths and describe key challenges considering corruption in Ukraine during wartime. 

The seminar will be organized as a Q&A session, providing participants the opportunity to ask questions directly to our guests. Researcher at OsloMet, Oleksandra Deineko will be the moderator of the conversation.

The event takes place at OsloMet University on 30 October 2024, 09:00 – 10:00 CEST, as well as digitally, on Zoom.

Although virtual attendance is available, we strongly encourage you to join us in person. Attendees who are physically present will have priority when it comes to asking questions. We’ll also provide coffee to help you kickstart the day.

Andrii Biletskyi 

Andrii Biletskyi is Ukrainian expert and member of academia and has contributed significantly to the fight against corruption in Ukraine since 2015, regularly participating in discussions on this agenda, such as whistleblower protection in Ukraine, or the implementation of anti-corruption instruments such as civil forfeiture of illicit assets. He holds a PhD in Law from the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University and has worked at the Anti-Corruption Research and Education Center and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy since 2018. He has authored/co-authored scientific and analytical papers in Ukrainian and English. He is currently researching integrity assessment/vetting of anti-corruption officials in Ukraine and the comparative analysis of integrity assessment/vetting of justice sector officials at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.   

Andrii has worked with several technical assistance projects. He has worked with the USAID Justice for All Project since 2016, especially the development of the anti-corruption component of legal education. He conducted corruption risk assessments in the field of legal education in 2021 and helped minimise corruption risks in law schools in 2023-24. He organised and conducted trainings as an anti-corruption expert for 20 environmental NGOs for the International Renaissance Foundation in 2021. He was also an expert for EU PravoJustice, U-Lead with Europe, Basel Institute of Governance, WWF and OSCE.   

Alisa Yurchenko  

Alisa Yurchenko  has been working as an investigative journalist and editor in Ukraine for over 10 years. Recently, she joined the team of The Kyiv Independent, English-language media outlet about Ukraine, as an investigative reporter. In 2014-2024, Alisa worked at the anti-corruption video project Bihus.Info. She specialized in monitoring the oligarchs’ activity and their influence on state assets, analyzing the non-public influence of top officials, and monitoring the work of the anti-corruption bodies of Ukraine. 

Before 2014, she worked in business media, particularly at the weekly Power of Money. Additionally, Alisa created several video courses, helping journalists and civil activists to find information from publicly available sources. She is the winner of national journalistic investigations prizes. 

Oleksandra Deineko (Moderator)  

Oleksandra Deineko is a Senior Researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR), OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University (Norway) and an Associate Professor at School Sociology V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Ukraine). She holds Ph.D. in Sociology (2015). Oleksandra is the member of the Norwegian Network for Research on Ukraine – UKRAINETT and a board member of the Sociological Association of Ukraine (SAU). Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine Oleksandra is focusing on studying social transformations occurred of Ukrainian society under the war.
