Abstract: Numerical studies of subsonic gas flow through micro-thruster as no-slip benchmark problem and high speed gas flow through short micro-channel with slip and temperature jump correction have been carried out by solving two dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes (NS) system of equations. A 2-D explicit finite volume (FV) flow solver has been developed using modified advection upwind splitting methods (AUSM+) to achieve the solution of micro-scale gas flow having high resolution shock capturing ability. The results obtained are compared with published 1-D numerical, Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and 2-D Finite element (FEM) results. This study utilizes the robustness and accuracy of AUSM+ and FVM to predict the micro-scale gas flows with simple explicit time marching, ranging from subsonic to supersonic flow.

Abstract: A web-based learning-aid to be used by engineering students attending introductory courses in mathematics and statistics is being developed and tried out at Oslo University College. The logic of this system is quite general, so that the system may be implemented in all subjects where students are required to solve problems with \”true\” and \”false\” solutions. Briefly, the operation of the system is thus: The system presents the individual student with an assignment. The student works out his or her solution and uploads it. The system then provides automatic and immediate feedback to the student on the solution. The detailed properties of this system and the way it is implemented are intended to stimulate learning behavior. A pilot study in the spring semester of 2005 has provided strong indications that the system has helped to increase student motivation and the amount of time the students spend on problem solving. The impact on the grades obtained by the students on the final examination is more uncertain. The failure rate was slightly lower than in a corresponding group of students one year earlier when FlexLearn had not yet been adopted, but the difference is not statistically significant. However, the slightly reduced failure rate in statistics merits closer attention when one considers that the opposite situation obtains for the development of the failure rates in two mathematical subjects: Here, in both cases, the failure rates for the students were larger than the year before, and the differences are statistically significant. FlexLearn had not been used in any of these two courses. Assuming that examination grades reflect learning, these results lend some tentative support to the hypothesis that the learning-aid FlexLearn has promoted student learning of statistics, particularly among the poorest students. However, a wide range of uncontrolled factors may also explain these data. A carefully designed experimental study is needed to eliminate these sources of uncertainty and provide a more definite answer.
