Journalism students used digital tools to collaborate during the annual Rig on press freedom.

The Rig on press freedom is held at OsloMet every spring. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s project had to be arranged digitally, as the university was closed and the students were spread all over Norway.

Photojournalism students from four countries launched their book and posters exhibition at OsloMet Sunday.

The launch was streamed live to reach those who could not be in Oslo. The webpage went viral earlier in the week.

First webinar on corona safety: The enemy is everywhere

screenshot of zoom meeting — Almost 40 participants from Ethiopia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda, on the 19 May took part in the first JMIC webinar on ‘Safety and ethics for journalists during the corona pandemic’.

On the zoom chat following a short introduction, JMIC trainer Abeer Saady answered both questions prepared in advance and spontaneous ones. She has previously done similar trainings for many journalist organizations and institutions.

3 May is the World Press Freedom Day. This year’s global theme, ‘Journalism without Fear or Favor’, provides an occasion to reflect on the importance of free and independent media, in particular in times of crisis, according to UNESCO.

Corona threatens press freedom

Norway is on the top of the 2020 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

But the Covid-19 pandemic highlight and amplify the many crises that threaten the right to freely reported, independent, diverse and reliable information, according to RSF.

“We are entering a decisive decade for journalism linked to crises that affect its future,” RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said.

“The coronavirus pandemic illustrates the negative factors threatening the right to reliable information, and is itself an exacerbating factor. What will freedom of information, pluralism and reliability look like in 2030? The answer to that question is being determined today.”
